INTO THE BLUE
acrylic on canvas, 2017

Wandering through the streets of cities such as Amsterdam, Lisbon, Boston, and Montreal, I embark on inner journeys of discovery. Enriched by centuries of cultural and commercial exchange, these waterside cities unfold like living organisms, weaving vital networks that expand, transform, and metamorphose over time into vast and sprawling topographies.

"Here new architectures bubble up and a return to the sources which create the genesis of these blue monochromes dotted with tentacular hydras. There, aerial views of roads, countries, seas and islands emerge, the close-up of which leads to the incessant journeys of an indistinguishable crowd through the streets, alleys and brooks of these cities and landscapes. So many topological spaces woven thread by thread, which far from concatenating like Russian dolls, permanently interconnect and open up to the world." by Marc-Williams DEBONO

"Jazz and the Urban Symphony: Blue as the Pulse of Life: The essence of jazz is ever-present in Chen’s work, and in many ways, her art mirrors the improvisational spirit of the music. Like a jazz band, her paintings are compositions of spontaneous decisions—dynamic, fluid, and unpredictable. Yet, just as jazz has a pulse that ties the improvisations together, blue serves as the constant in her visual compositions. It is the underlying rhythm, the tonal center that keeps the work grounded even as it sways between abstraction and realism." by Tina LAI

On s’y enracine, on s’y démène, on s’y noie.

Beyond the Blue

To enter the intense blue that CHEN Mei-Tsen offers us is to go on an adventure, to browse a travel diary full of memories rich in emotion, inked, topographic, cherished and cracked. We are caught in the web, the paradox of wandering and being part of a territory. We follow the footprints, maps, networks, tumults, windings in abundance which construct the primary identity. We begin to embrace the forms, deploying the root architectonics to a breaking point that grips the guts while opening horizons. Because the trace is there, tenacious, rhizomic, which invites us to penetrate every interstice, to travel through arteries, forests, synapses, floating worlds, smart cities as well as remote urban areas. Miles of confluent inspirations which carries us within the work, in its historicity: Taipei revisited each time...

Here new architectures bubble up and a return to the sources which create the genesis of these blue monochromes dotted with tentacular hydras. There, aerial views of roads, countries, seas and islands emerge, the close-up of which leads to the incessant journeys of an indistinguishable crowd through the streets, alleys and brooks of these cities and landscapes. So many topological spaces woven thread by thread, which far from concatenating like Russian dolls, permanently interconnect and open up to the world.

However, it is Gaia that we are talking about, a living earth that breathes and swarms with creatures inseparable from their mother cloth. The work penetrates there, follows each outline, transforms sometimes into a Gorgon, sometimes into a permanent host of nature. Mesological relationship to the world which invites us to rethink the intimate links between being and the environment, minerals and plants, man and his habitat. Letting history, love and feelings show through ecumenal bridges: such is the challenge of the artist sailing from the architectural plants of her birthplace to the dense vegetation of urban forests.

Where are these throbbing ebbs and flows leading us to? To exile or to cohesion? To unity or to dissemination? Mei-Tsen's response is an intertwining of “I“ dotted with invitations to map, to inscribe nomadism, the material in the living. She explodes the blues like so many affects which intersect and uncross, certainties of sources surrounded by white volutes materializing the infinite paths of her ramblings. The cities follow one another and fit into each other. Cultures are revealed. The geographies fold back – gaps in the sky – taking on meaning, as if flown over by St Exupéry. A crossover between otherness and identity which leads her to move from experience to the future, from wide angle to thin branches that streaks the butterflies. Every thought becomes ephemeral. All anchoring is in vain. We just have to abandon ourselves to this empty-fullness.

This impregnation infuses throughout the story and can only reach us, as we feel the beating heart of the city, the evanescence of the clouds, its ventral thrusts: buried memories overflowing the entire space, the hazards of wandering, the atmosphere of the Place...

From Blueprints to Paradise thus intertwine the trees that make up the work. The network is woven. We take root here, we strive for it, we drown there. Plant luxuriance merging with the arteries of the city, variation of ultramarine blues dotted with metaphorical flashes, maze of neural ramifications in warm colors... Morning encounters of lianas, roots, viscera and blood, in the sense that it bubbles a new life, a unique aesthetic bringing the landscape, with its cohort of emotions, to surface on the world map.

The invisible bridge stretched by Mei-Tsen between the canvases thus appears step by step in our imaginations. It gains in amplitude, reconnects with the living, whispers the unspeakable and wonder.
